I’m Heather Stenson, a freelance technical writer based in Oakland, California. I help tech companies of all sizes get their users to “Hello World” and beyond with clear technical documentation.

About Me

How did I get into the tech writing game? WELL.

I was a librarian for many years, then took a coding bootcamp to become a developer. After bootcamp, a friend recommended me for a technical writing job at her company. I applied… but first I had to figure out what technical writing is. Cue the montage of me typing "technical writing" into the search bar and nodding furiously. And I’ve been a tech writer ever since!

Tech writing blends the instructional and organizational skills that I used as a librarian with the development skills I learned in bootcamp. I read and write code, interpret jargon, and ask the right questions when I’m talking to engineers and other subject matter experts. I’m not an engineer, but I can translate engineer-speak into accessible documentation that your users will understand and trust.

When I’m not writing docs, I enjoy running (currently prepping for my third marathon), reading (I’m omnivorous but lean towards fantasy and sci-fi), and exploring the many parks, playgrounds, and green spaces of the San Francisco Bay Area with my family. I also really like potato chips, why do you ask?
